Press Reviews

“For two thousand years, Salome’s story has been told from a male perspective. It’s time to question this narrative!” says Nicole Aebersold. The signs are promising that she will succeed in doing so in a meaningful way at the opera premiere of the Festival Retz. The Swiss director is not staging Richard Strauss’s erotically charged Salome there, but rather a setting that is some 200 years older and rife with conflict: In the oratorio of the same name by the Italian composer Antonio Maria Bononcini, Salome’s mother, Herodias, is by no means secure in her position of power; rather, she faces the threat of being cast out by her lover Herod and stoned by the people. What follows is a struggle for survival in which she relies, not least, on her daughter’s powers of seduction. (...)

The stage production by Nicole Aebersold and Jasmin Avissar makes use of large-scale projections, striking lighting design, and choreographed sequences. The opera, composed in 1709 for the Viennese imperial court (...) with the original title “La Decollazione di San Giovanni Batista,” holds dramatic potential that is given a very
profound interpretation in Retz. The cinematic element is particularly successful. By incorporating the residents of Retz and the region’s distinctive wine-growing landscape, the production reenacts, among other things, Filippino Lippi’s fresco “The Feast of Herod,” thereby establishing a connection between biblical iconography and an idealized present.
Ewald Baringer, APA, 12.07.2025

The direction, which is also abstractly inspired by the gestural language of the Baroque, impresses with its subtle multi-layered approach. The church interior is transformed into a space of tension and longing for the characters, choreographed with both economy and precise, gestural movement. (...) Complementing this character-driven direction, the cinematic layer adds atmospheric and thematic depth. It shows people inside the church. It shows abstract close-ups of biblical fruits that take shape like living paintings. In addition, animation artist Nicole Aebersold transports the audience into the natural landscape of the Weinviertel region. Drawing inspiration from Filippino Lippi’s fresco The Feast of Herod, people set up a dinner party outdoors that slowly and subtly spirals out of control. (...) This feels coherent and precisely conceived, blending well with the musical interpretation.
Ljubiša Tošić, Der Standard, 14.07.2025

The most surprising thing about this evening, however, is the staging by Nicole Aebersold and Jasmin Avissar. The two women do not fall into the trap that most of their colleagues sink into when tackling Baroque operas: they do not even attempt to turn this work into a veristic action drama, thereby completely depleting the prop department’s supply of fake blood. No, Aebersold and Avissar are wise enough to rely on stylized gestures and symbolic aesthetics: the video projections of pomegranates and pomegranate seeds are more beautiful and striking, and convey more of the story’s tragedy than all the blood bags in the world. (...)
All in all: the best production ever seen in Retz and the most artistically serious production of the opera summer so far.
Robert Quitta, Online Merker, 22.07.2025

Can biblical figures be viewed in a new light, reinterpreted? In the second year of the new leadership team at the Retz Festival- which also marks its 20th anniversary - the answer to this question must clearly be “yes.”
(...) On the projection screens that taper toward the center of the church, preparations for the upcoming feast can be seen in a figurative sense. And soon after, the first guests - played in the film by residents of Retz, many of whom volunteered for the shoot - arrive. As is often the case with guests, some show up uninvited, as in this instance with John the Baptist, who, upon his entrance, slams the church door shut. (...) A separate cinematic motif is dedicated to the character of John: the church in a reverse shot. The more forcefully the preacher delivers his accusations, the more the (projected) church interior fills with worshippers. Just how dangerous John can become for Herod is made very clear in a scene where the churchgoers in the film react to every hand gesture the preacher makes. (...) The cinematic symbolism that Swiss director Aebersold has devised for the character of Salome (Anna Piroli, with a gentle voice) is also striking. A pomegranate, initially caressed by a woman’s hand, is then menacingly caressed with a knife by that very same hand in the scene where Anna Piroli appears as Salome.
(...) The moment that defines the quality of a performance is when silence reigns at its conclusion. The flood of images and the striking voices, combined with the passionate performance by the brilliant Continuum ensemble under the baton of principal conductor Luca De Marchi, made that moment of catching one’s breath
perfectly understandable. Afterward, nothing but pure enthusiasm took hold, along with a well-deserved standing ovation from the audience.
