Rumours

There is something in the air.
It spreads.
Everywhere.

Rumours is a slow but forceful change of power status, as inevitable as life itself. Humans are the mere silhouettes here; their shots are mostly shot against a static camera, and their fleeting impressions are accompanied by shots of domestic decay. Overturning the tables, the film shows decay as a human condition (and not as a natural condition), nature itself is represented as a carefully lit, almost glowing force at night, with brief but still strong movements. Experimental here borrows from the suspenseful, and the film noir tradition; entering and breaking a house is what all those plants will gradually do, step-by-step. Aebersold builds her case for Rumours (with the help of the tremendously evocative sound design by Christoph Undisz) as a transition that needs to be accepted in its own terms. The film stirs your visual senses and olfactory palate; it is suitably lightweight in its execution, suspenseful, and admirable in its frankness.

„Rumours“ zeigt einen langsamen, aber eindringlichen Wandel der Machtverhältnisse, so unvermeidlich wie das Leben selbst. Die Menschen sind hier bloße Silhouetten; ihre Aufnahmen entstehen meist vor einer statischen Kamera, und ihre flüchtigen Eindrücke werden von Bildern des Verfalls im häuslichen Umfeld begleitet. Der Film kehrt die Verhältnisse um und zeigt den Verfall als menschlichen Zustand (und nicht als natürlichen Zustand); die Natur selbst wird als sorgfältig beleuchtete, fast leuchtende Kraft in der Nacht dargestellt, mit kurzen, aber dennoch kraftvollen Bewegungen. Das Experimentelle greift hier Elemente der Spannung und der Film-Noir-Tradition auf; in ein Haus einzudringen ist das, was all diese Pflanzen nach und nach tun werden, Schritt für Schritt. Aebersold untermauert ihre These für „Rumours“ (mit Hilfe des äußerst stimmungsvollen Sounddesigns von Christoph Undisz) als einen Übergang, der zu seinen eigenen Bedingungen akzeptiert werden muss. Der Film regt die visuellen Sinne und den Geruchssinn an; er ist in seiner Umsetzung angemessen leichtfüßig, spannungsgeladen und in seiner Offenheit bewundernswert.
